Parent behavior therapy is the top treatment for children with ADHD.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends parent behavior therapy for caregivers of kids with ADHD. Some past research has even found that the combination of medication and therapy is more effective than either alone. However, only 3/10 parents of children with ADHD end up receiving parent behavior therapy.

What is parent behavior therapy?

Parent behavior therapy is therapy where the therapist works with caregivers of kids with ADHD to support them in managing their child’s behaviors. Therapists often work with caregivers on learning strategies such as positive reinforcement, positive communication skills, and effective limit-setting. Parent behavior therapy is the only therapy that has been found to be effective for children with ADHD. Talk therapy and play therapy have not been found to be effective; however, therapists may incorporate play into therapy as a way to have parents practice new skills with their child. Some parenting programs that are effective have specific names such as Incredible Years, Parent Child Interaction Therapy, and the Triple P Parenting Program.

How can I find a provider for parent behavior therapy?

Finding a provider who specializes in parent behavior therapy can be difficult. Here are some recommended resources for identifying an appropriate therapist.

What should I ask a potential therapist?

  • What types of treatment do you use for kids with ADHD?

  • How much involvement will I have in therapy?

  • Do you involve my child in therapy? How so?

  • How long is treatment expected to last?

    • Treatment should be time-limited with an expected range of therapy sessions
